DTV Television

You may need to rescan your channels on your DTV television at this time to get WTJR if you have had problems receiving WTJR in the past also to receive Channel 16.2-3-4  .

For the latest information on DTV please visit these sites. http://www.dtv.gov/index.html or the NAB site at dtvanswers.com

WTJR is now transmitting digital television (DTV) on local channel 16.1. (Appearing as 16.1 on your television though we are on channel 32)* We are also now on 16.2., 16.3, 16.4  DTV offers a number of advantages over analog broadcasting. Such as a clearer and sharper picture, no reception ghosting, improved sound and on screen television listings. And coming soon (2010) to WTJR multiple channels of Christian television such as channel 16.1 , 16.2, 16.3, 16.4! Right now WTJR is transmitting Standard Definition (SD) Television signals on its DTV channel with only one channel 16.1. But as HDTV source material (programs) become available they may be presented also. 16.4 is HDTV CTN.

What is required to view digital television? For many it may be as simple as adding a black box much like a cable box to your existing television. This is a DTV converter box.
Another option is buying a new television with a built in DTV tuner. The price of digital television equipment is falling rapidly.

Please pray for us that we can continue to broadcast the gospel of Jesus Christ. And Prayerfully consider becoming a financial partner with the station. We are supported by viewers l
ike you.

WTJR-DTV is on channel 32 but will show up as 16.1 after you do a channel scan.

What is a TV Converter Box?
A TV connected to cable, satellite or other pay TV service does not require a TV converter box. Consumers have a variety of options to get DTV.Options to explore include:
Keep your existing analog TV and purchase a TV converter box. A converter box plugs into your TV and will keep it working after Feb. 17, 2009, or Connect to cable, satellite or other pay service, or Purchase a television with a digital tuner.

WTJR Power & Coverage Area:
WTJR discontinued analog broadcasting 16 and is now broadcasting only in digital on channel 16.1. You are watching our digital signal now (if you are able to view us), so the equipment you have in place is all you need to continue viewing WTJR. We are only broadcasting 1 channel at this time in SD (Standard Definition) not HD (High Definition). The geographic coverage area of our digital signal is slightly smaller than the coverage area of our old analog signal, and will remain so until late 2009, so areas near Burlington Iowa, Jacksonville Illinois and Mexico Missouri may not receive our signal during this time. In order to properly receive digital signals, over-the-air, viewers need the proper antenna and a DTV converter box or TV with a DTV tuner. Cable and satellite viewers need to check all of their televisions to ensure that they still receive our signal. If you know of someone that cannot view our signal, please have them contact us at WTJR.

The national DTV transition occurred June 12th 2009 only some Low power TV stations are still analog. WTJR is a full power station. WTJR-TV16 has shut off its analog channel as of January 20th 2009. We are now Digital channel 16.

WTJR has upgraded its antenna and transmission line at our tower site.
This will allow WTJR to reach more people with our over the air broadcast DTV signal. We have installed a new antenna on the top of the tower; the center radiation is 875 feet.

We have increased our transmitter power from 8 KW (8,000 watts) to 27.5 KW (27,500 watts). In addition we have a new transmission line, so more power reaches the antenna 900 feet away from the transmitter. We now have an ERP power of 1 million watts at our antenna.

This is a large project for WTJR. The new antenna weighs 10,000 pounds and is 48 feet long. The old antenna on top of the tower was removed and the new antenna installed. The base of the antenna is at 850 feet above ground on top of the tower. This required large lifting equipment and an experienced tower crew.
We should now have better reception in our viewing area and reach more people with Christian broadcasting.

Keep us in your prayers and financial support as we “work together till Jesus returns”. Jim Wilson, Engineer WTJR-TV CTN

* Channel 32 equals 16.1 why?
Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP) is data that is transmitted along with a station’s DTV signal that tells DTV receivers important information about the station and what is being broadcast. The most important function of PSIP is to provide a method for DTV receivers to identify a DTV station and to determine how a receiver can tune to it. PSIP identifies both the DTV channel and the associated NTSC (analog) channel. It helps maintain the current channel branding because DTV receivers will electronically associate the two channels making it easy for viewers to tune to the DTV station even if they do not know the channel number.

In addition to identifying the channel number, PSIP tells the receiver whether multiple program channels are being broadcast and, if so, how to find them. It identifies whether the programs are closed captioned, conveys V-chip information, if data is associated with the program, and much more. If broadcasters do not include properly encoded PSIP data in their DTV signals, receivers may not correctly identify and tune to the station. Therefore, it is vital that all broadcasters understand PSIP and include the data in their DTV stations signals. PSIP is a mandatory Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) Standard.
